Debra Batchelor, Director and Charity Trustee of Margaret Haes Riding Centre, has been awarded the honour of a British Empire Medal by His Majesty The King in his Birthday Honours List 2025. The award citation refers to Debra’s role as a fundraiser and volunteer for the Margaret Haes Riding Centre, Bury, for services to those with a disability.

Debra said: “I am delighted and deeply moved to have received the honour of a British Empire Medal.

It’s a huge honour and I am feeling very humble. My husband, John, and my family and friends are very proud”.

She continued: “I have had so many heartfelt congratulations from the local community and everyone involved with the Riding Centre, including staff and volunteers, which has been amazing and overwhelming.”

Debra added: “It is wonderful that the work of the Margaret Haes Riding Centre is valued by so many people.”

Everyone is welcome at Margaret Haes, which is a British Horse Society Approved Centre, and offers horse riding and experiences from the age of 4 years, volunteering from age of 13 years, together with alternative education provision for children and young people. The main group of clients are those with a disability. This Centre is passionate about improving well being and mental health for all.

The Charity has had so much support over the years and especially in securing ownership of the Riding Centre in March 2023 through match funding from a Community Ownership grant and a local Charitable Trust.

A delighted Debra concluded: “There are so many people to personally thank for their support. It is important to enjoy the moment and how far we have come together on this journey.

“I look forward to building on the achievements so far with everyone involved with this wonderful Riding Centre, which is close to my heart.”
